Connolly purchased the brand in 1995 and was the third owner of Sugar ’n Spice, which originally opened in 1945. The hope, the Alovises said, is to keep the business alive through its next owner, though they acknowledge there is no real way of knowing what will transpire after the property is purchased.

For anyone who’s ever been to Balboa Island in Newport Beach, the iconic fantasy of a Southern California beach day includes munching a frozen banana or ice cream treat to beat the heat. Now, the iconic Sugar ‘n Spice dessert stand has come up for sale. The World War II-era banana stand, which inspired a similar establishment on TV’s Arrested Development, is on the market. Asking price? $3.5 million, $5 million including the banana business.

We celebrated the official launch of this iconic property at 310 Marine Avenue on Balboa Island with free frozen bananas and Balboa Bars on Thursday, February 8th. We were honored and very excited that Good Day LA, Fox News 11 came to cover the sale. Guests were able to meet not only the current owners, Will and Courtney Alovis, but also Don Cook, the original family member that started it all in 1945 with the OG frozen banana!
